Simon de Montfort

Simon de Montfort commemoration

The Society took a major role in the commemoration of the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Evesham. We mounted a number of displays around the town:

  • St Laurence’s Church – one of a series of displays in co-ordination with the Churches Conservation Trust – including new display boards describing the development from Magna Carta to the Provisions of Oxford championed by Simon de Montfort.
  • Almonry Heritage Centre – a temporary display supplementing the permanent display there in the room dedicated to Simon de Montfort.
  • Riverside shopping centre.

We are also proud to have been involved in some of the events of the Battle of Evesham Festival in August marking the anniversary of the Battle itself. See the website here for further information.

In particular, the Society supported the keynote talk by Professor David Carpenter on August 4th in St Lawrence’s Church. The church for the talk, and the commemoration at the Abbey on the preceding Saturday, were enhanced by the banners made for the Anniversary. They are seen here at the Abbey Fields for the ceremony there.
