Commemorating World War One
The Society was pleased to be awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to pay for a series of activities relating to World War I. This funding has supported a rich array of activities including:
- The Great War (exhibition at the Almonry Museum)
- Abbey Manor Hospital
- Feeding the People (exhibition at St Lawrence’s)
- Heroes of the Great War (exhibitions at Riverside & St Lawrence’s)
- Supporting the Troops (exhibition at St Lawrence’s)
The Society also organised a number of talks concerned with the Great War. All Society talks are open to everyone – all are welcome!
- End of the Great War (Dr Nick Lloyd)
- War Diary – The Story of a WWI Soldier (Wilma Hayes)
The Society has also published a series of articles on WWI in its in-house magazine ‘The Almoner’s Pen‘. In addition members of the Society visited the nursing home ‘Ferry View’ on Armistice Day (11 November) to share memories of family members who had fought in the War, and show mementos and heirlooms.
We are please to have supported Pershore Arts with their exhibition of artwork at Number 8 in Pershore on the theme of “Wychavon in WW1”. Some artwork from our Abbey Manor displays were included in the exhibition.
The Pershore Arts work was exhibited at The Civic Centre for three months from May 2016.
